Editorial Design
The first video "Editorial Design Basics" is a video on YouTube that explores, explains, and teaches the viewer what Editorial Design is and what it is used for. The first thing the video says is that we have to do is that we need to implement a grid system because it creates a system on the page for us to follow, just like the blueprints of a structure before it is built, the video also goes on to say that we need to implement some type of hierarchy for the reader to follow without getting lost, fatigued or frustrated, one example of what we can do to make the reader stop and reflect on the reading is that we can put a double spread of an image so that while the reader stops to see and admire the image they can think about all of the information that they just received. We can implement the usage of a grid, the type hierarchy, and the use of images can be all put together so that the reader can follow all of the information while taking the time to take and prosses the information that they receive without getting lost or confused.
In the article "6 fantastic editorial designs and what we can learn from them" by Tom May, there were three designs from it that stood out to me in particular, first "Mr. B & Friends ‘Coriandrum’ 10 Yearbook", second "Charm, Belligerence & Perversity by GBH", and third "This Is Me, Full Stop by Here Design", these designs stood out to me in particular because of that they stood for. "Mr. B & Friends ‘Coriandrum’ 10 Yearbook" was a celebration of 10 years of creative collaborations that culminated in a specific design that was made with specific intent so that each page and screen view should take the eye on a journey, while " Charm, Belligerence & Perversity by GBH" was a collection of Incomplete Works by GBH, which despite being a collection of abandoned projects still came together to find a typographic system that allowed the 'show and tell’ of the project stories and the pseudo-psychology to co-exist, and finally the "This Is Me, Full Stop by Here Design" which was made to harness beautiful design to explore “the secret life of punctuation marks”, which is a concept that branches out of typography that I found really interesting. A prime example of editorial design that I know of is the CNN website and how it is structured to deliver information.
